Joy

As Christians, we should be the most hope-filled joyful people in the world, and yet so often instead of joy our disposition is one of cynicism, fear, doubt, worry, and despair. But the fruit of the Spirit is joy.

Theologian Dallas Willard defines joy as “a pervasive sense of well-being that is infused with hope because of the goodness of God.” Joy marked the life of Jesus, but joy also marked the death and resurrection of Jesus. Hebrews 12 reminds us that it was for joy that Jesus went to the cross on behalf of sinners. The cross was a moment of sheer agony and sorrow, and yet there was joy on the other side because there was life on the other side.

Now, by the power of the Spirit, we are called to cultivate the fruit of joy as seek to become more like Christ.
