Peace

We live in a time and culture of anxiety. Research shows that about 1 in 3 Americans struggle with anxiety, the average American high schooler has the anxiety level of a psychiatric patient of the 1950s, and the US mental health industry is worth 200 billion dollars. Anxiety is a very real and very prevalent problem in America. But we also see in Scripture that anxiety is not of the Spirit but of the flesh. Anxiety is not the way of Jesus. The fruit of the Spirit is peace.

What is peace? The Biblical idea of peace is captured in the Old Testament word “shalom” and the New Testament work “eirene”. It doesn’t simply mean the absence of conflict or this zen-like state, but rather both words emphasize a wholeness or completion that comes from God’s design for flourishing. To put it simply - in the Bible peace is everything being right.

And that’s the offer for believers given to us through the person and work of Jesus. Ephesians 2 and Micah 5 both tell us that Christ Himself is our peace. Which means even through the chaos and uncertainty of life as broken people in a broken world, we have the offer of inner flourishing and inner wholeness through Christ Jesus our Lord.
