Self-Control
Where do you go when you daydream? What is your vision of the good life? In our cultural moment, all of us are motivated by some version of the good life, yet this good life is more than likely some version of fleshly self-fulfillment. We are the masters of our fates, we are the captains of our souls. Our own self-fulfillment is the highest good we can pursue. A more common way of hearing this on a daily basis is ‘follow your heart,’ ‘live your truth,’ ‘best life now.’ All of these stem from the idea that our fulfillment or your happiness is your greatest aim. This is all over our culture today - we are seeking to fulfill ourselves through what we do, what we have, who we have, or our deepest desires.
And yet into the midst of this comes the way of Jesus and the fruit of self-control. Not self-control how we define it or use it - to serve our own purposes - but self-control aimed at the glory of God. The godly fruit of self-control seeks to subdue our desires, not for our own gain or sake, but in giving our lives away in pursuit of Christ. We walk in the way of Jesus, take up our cross in self-control, lay down our lives, and find them in Him.
